I broke my camera once
. . . and that presented an odd little choice. I could either send it in, pay to get it fixed and wait a couple weeks to get it back. Instead, I could try to fix it myself. I’ve fixed lots of electronics before. Worst case scenario: I fail and I still just send it in, pay to get it fixed and wait a couple weeks to get it back. Best case scenario: I actually fix it. For free. And I don’t have to wait for weeks to use it again.
And it worked!
But then I broke a lens. It wouldn’t focus properly. So I thought I’d try to fix it, too. Once it was working, my wife suggested that I might start buying broken cameras, fixing them, and re-selling them. So that’s what I did.
But now there were broken cameras all over the house
So life got stressful at home. So many cameras! And lenses! All over the house! And more parts coming in all the time. So it was time to move them into another space.
The added bonus
As I started looking for space to rent it dawned on me: a work space could double as a studio! And as much as I really do love fixing cameras, I like using them even more.
We found a place!
There was an old tattoo shop super close to my house. The rent was pretty low, even though it needed a lot of work inside. For instance: Every wall was red. Solid red. Loud red. “Right after you mass murder a tattoo parlor staff with a scythe and cover the walls in blood” red. It was horrible.
So we decided on a – ahem – DIFFERENT color scheme: black and white and wood. NO RED!
We left one wall alone
One wall was black. The previous tenants had painted the front wall – which happens to be stone – with a glossy, black, latex paint. It would have been a HUGE pain in the butt to repaint it with a matte paint. As I started experimenting with the light in the space, though, I really started liking the look of the black brick as a signature look for the studio. It’s a pretty unique background, and it’s fairly consistent with the look I like, so we kept it.
